After more than a year in the studio, and in the wake of a $250,000 (about $1.1 million today) media campaign, Born to Run was released on 25 August 1975.

While the purchased hype was successful (peaking at #3 and remaining on the Billboard charts for 29 weeks), it threatened to overshadow the album itself, and upset Springsteen who demanded that the “I have seen the future of rock ‘n’ roll” buttons not be distributed in the UK and suspended interviews (after he had appeared on the covers of Time and Newsweek the same week)
